TEAMING:

WDE’s PBS Team is comprised of one teacher representative for each grade level, one representative for special areas, one representative for educational support personnel (ESP), as well as the Guidance Counselor. WDE’s Administrative Assistant is the chairperson of the PBS Team. The PBS Team meets monthly. The staff has “bought into” PBS because they have a voice in deciding how the program works for our school. The staff is given opportunities to provide feedback, offer suggestions, and to make choices in every step of the PBS process.

The PBS Team reviews data such as attendance, grades, climate surveys, and office referrals during each monthly meeting to determine the course of PBS, progress and successes. WDE uses the School-wide Information System (SWIS) to monitor office referrals. The School-Wide Information System (SWIS) is a web-based information system designed to help school personnel to use office referral data to design school-wide and individual student interventions.

Data is shared with the WDE staff via e-mails, PBS Team representatives, monthly PBS Team meetings, and monthly Faculty meetings.

The greatest strength of our team is feedback and collaboration. The staff and PBS representatives are not afraid to discuss the pieces of our PBS system that may not be working as planned. Once a problem has been identified, the team works collaboratively to correct the problem.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Teaching school-wide expectations and making data-based decisions are strengths of WDE’s PBS Team. Classroom referrals and bus referrals were targeted as areas of concern as evident by review of data such as, office referrals. Through collaborative efforts successful strategies were developed and implemented. Bus drivers were provided with PBS training.

OUTCOMES:
The PBS Team worked collaboratively within the group as well as with the staff to create an action plan to reduce the number of classroom referrals and bus referrals. Rules were immediately developed for these areas that were in line with our school-wide expectations. Lesson plans to teach the rules were developed and presented to the staff. The rules were reinforced in the classroom and on the school’s morning show by administrative staff. A positive change was noticed immediately in the classrooms. Progress was made on buses as well, but not a quickly. However, once bus drivers received PBS training in October a definite change was noted. WDE has experienced a decrease of 28% in classroom referrals and a decrease of 18% in bus referrals.

OBSTACLES:
Creating an effective reward system continues to be biggest challenge our team has faced. The team met monthly with faculty and staff and constantly evaluated the reward system to determine strengths and weaknesses. Through input from students, ESPs, teachers, and administration a more effective reward system was developed. We continue to work on issues regarding our reward system.
