TEAMING:

Sabal Palm’s PBS team is made up of a representative of each grade level, one teacher from our related arts team, an assistant, our school counselor and the Dean of Students. Our team meets monthly to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of our PBS program. These meetings are very productive and each member’s view and ideas are valued. Most of the team members have been on this team since our first year of implementation. This has helped in building an effective group that is familiar with each other and works well together. The Dean of Students is the coach of this team. This helps to bridge communication from the team to the leadership team of the school.

During each monthly meeting data is analyzed to determine strengths and weaknesses. We celebrate our success with the decrease in referrals from the year prior and the months before. We also look at the data from SWIS to help us determine the areas that we need to put more emphasis on. The data that is provided from SWIS is shared with the staff as well as our School Advisory Committee to show the progress that we are making.

Since our team is comprised of representatives from the various grade levels/departments in our school we are able to relay the information that is discussed to each staff member via our team. The minutes from each of our team meetings is e-mailed to all of the staff. This is shared monthly also. At the beginning of the school year we hold faculty training on the procedures that we have in place for PBS. We hold refresher training in the middle of the year for our faculty as well. Reminders are often sent out to the staff in regards to various PBS events that are happening via e-mail.

The PBS team at Sabal Palm works very well together. We respect each other’s teaching experience and are very good at brainstorming ideas to improve our program. Everyone on the team truly desires the best for SPE and is willing to support PBS to achieve that goal. All members of the team actively participate in our meetings and are a support system for the faculty. One person does not carry the load for PBS implementation. The team does a great job of working together and empowering other teachers to continue to strive for excellence within our school.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Sabal Palm has done an amazing job at creating a positive and consistent environment on our campus. This program has been ongoing and engaging for our students and staff. Some of the areas that we have covered to create this culture are: • Providing training and support to staff, assistants and our bus drivers on the expectations of PBS • Metal signs made and posted around campus that display our expectations • Creating a Sabal Palm pledge that is recited every morning that emphasize the expectations of being a “Sabal Palm Hawk”. • Creating a consistent reward system for students that is carried out by our entire faculty. This reward system also carries over to our school’s bus drivers. • Holding assemblies for students that discuss the expectations of Sabal Palm as well as a kick-off for each grade level for grade level goals to meet. When these goals are met, the students are rewarded with an activity of their choosing. • The faculty and staff do a wonderful job of rewarding our students for their positive behavior. • We are very strong with data analysis and presenting the information to all shareholders. • We have put into place a plan of action regarding infractions and the disciplinary process. • Recognizing teachers and faculty for their efforts within our school. Teachers are recognized by other teachers. When a teacher receives this recognition they are then able to pick a “Good Egg” reward that can either be candy or gift certificates.

OUTCOMES:
Since the implementation of PBS we have created a more consistent environment on our campus. When the faculty is asked their feelings about our PBS implementation they frequently say that it has brought about a consistency among the entire faculty. By having set expectations and procedures to enforce these expectations there is a culture created in the school that all stakeholders are on the same page. Students are aware of the school-wide expectations, and control can be gained over a large group in a quicker amount of time. The implementation of PBS has worked to improve student behavior on our campus. Most students are motivated by the PBS rewards system and want to follow the expectations that are set for them.

OBSTACLES:
Implementing an entire program from almost nothing in the 2005-2006 school year was a challenge. We have learned to adapt the rewards and procedures based on teacher input as the program has developed. Since our implementation it has also been a challenge to get the full support of our school’s administration. The positive climate that has been created as well as the consistency among the staff has made it easier to get more backing from our leadership team. In the past our school had very inconsistent procedures on how classroom teachers handled discipline problems in their classroom. PBS has helped to build a culture within our school that is supported by our entire faculty.
