TEAMING:

Our PBS team is comprised of teachers, office secretary, PBS district coach, school psychologist, parent, and an assistant principal. At the beginning of this school year during pre-planning days, our PBS team coordinated a training day for all teachers, administrators, and deans. There were three break-out sessions and each one was designed to address a specific aspect of PBS. From the PBS philosophy to the details of completing a Minor Infraction form, each session explained the process and provided time for questions and answers. Upon returning from winter break, another in service was presented by our Neptune PBS Team Leader. She reintroduced, reviewed, and re-taught our school PBS procedures and expectations.

The data was shared in the preplanning break out sessions at the beginning of the school year to compare pre and post PBS implementation. This information was used to provide booster training and coordinate activities. Also a student interest survey helped to determine the items to offer in our PBS store and the events to plan for PBS activities.

We have PBS team meetings twice a month. The meeting is open to all staff members and is announced via e-mail, faculty meetings, SAC meetings, and the PA system. All grade level teams are encouraged to send one teacher per team. One team member has created a template for the team minutes. After taking minutes during the meeting, she then e-mails the minutes to the entire school. PBS is always placed on the agenda for SAC and faculty meetings. This allows us an opportunity to share our monthly PBS news with community members as well as staff members.

Our strengths are in the level of commitment from the staff members who consistently attend the meetings and the support from our district PBS coach. Although there are frequently different staff members that attend our bi-monthly meetings, there is a core group that is consistently present at each meeting. These teachers, office secretary, administrator, and district coach wholeheartedly support and believe in the PBS initiative. We also have a dedicated group of parents and grandparents that regularly volunteer with our PBS store and PBS events.

IMPLEMENTATION:

We excel at providing special events that students attend by “purchasing” tickets with their Sea Hawk Sand Dollars. Some of the events this year include ice cream socials, cookie decorating, DJ party with some “chill” time, pep rally, and a play. We also had a 14 Day Challenge barbecue. Each homeroom that could go 14 days without any student in that homeroom getting an office referral was invited to a barbecue. Later this month we are having a hat day. Students “purchase” a wrist band so they may wear a hat. Our final PBS event for this school year will be a continental breakfast in May. We also excel at enlisting the help and support of our parents who regularly assist with PBS activities and our PBS store. Through parent and business donations, we have received $1,200 this school year.

OUTCOMES:
This is the second year PBS has been a part of our sixth grade center and this is the first year it has expanded to our main campus. Teachers are using the minor infraction forms more effectively to keep parents informed of student behavior. Most teachers have indicated that the use of the forms has helped to decrease the incidents that would require an office referral. We proactively look for students that embrace our Hawk expectations: good Habits, Accountable, strong Work ethic, and Kind to each other.

OBSTACLES:
Obtaining data continues to be a challenge. Osceola School District is currently working on overcoming this problem.
