TEAMING:

~We believe the St. Andrew STAR Team works well because we are represented by a diverse mix of our school staff. There are 2 Teachers, 2 Paraprofessionals, 2 Counselors and Our administrator on our team. We openly discuss what behavioral issues arise and then explore possible interventions and proactive strategies to implement. Our administrator is a very active member of our team. This is Ms. Weber’s 2nd year on our team and with her extensive background in working with ESE students and with the Crisis Prevention Institute, Inc. as a trainer we think she is a wonderful asset to our team.

We utilize various reports from the SWIS for our STARs meetings. Using these reports we can look for patterns in behavior, times and specific areas. We can also pull individual student reports to look for individual patterns, such as academic areas or transitions.

We share our behavior data once a month with our entire staff at the first of the month faculty meeting. We also share this data when we have Red Flag meetings to explore and offer suggestions on possible strategies to aid the teacher and student in reshaping behaviors.

We believe because of the diversity of our Team make-up that we are an all around strong team. We have all the benefits of each staff level input and the assurance that ALL thoughts and opinions are heard.

IMPLEMENTATION:

~We believe we are doing a very good job with the reward process for our students. We have several levels of rewards built into our program.

  1. STAR Bucks- These are an immediate reward.
  2. STAR Store- Students get to spend the STAR Bucks they earn at the STAR Store. This happens twice a month.
  3. Earned Time- 15 minutes of preferred choice activities which occurs 2 to 3 times a day, depending on the needs of the individual class.
  4. “I’m a STAR” Board- At the beginning of each week we place a certificate and small prize on the board for each student that didn’t have an ETO visit or a Bus Conduct for the previous week.
  5. Earned Friday- This event is for students that have earned at least 80% of their points for the week and have their work completed to the teacher’s satisfaction.
  6. “SuperSTAR” Drawing- Every Friday students that have met the Super Day criteria (90 pts. and no DRs or BCRs) every day that week are entered into the drawing. The principal draws 2 names and these students get to come up and enter her special prize closet.
  7. Principal’s 500 Club- Any student with a perfect week(500 pts.) is awarded a special treat by the principal that week.

OUTCOMES:

~We have a better sense of the climate at our school because of the data that we have access to through SWIS. The communication between teaching staff and support staff has improved. Data is more readily available because it is at our fingertips. The students and the staff all know where our school focus is because of the rules and expectations that we have posted everywhere. PBS has made us all feel like a more cohesive Unit.

  OBSTACLES:

~We have had tremendous staff turnover for the last couple of years. This has made our training for the program a challenge but the new staff always seem eager to learn about our program. Everyone being on the same page has helped with knowing what to expect and how to handle any situation.
