TEAMING:

~Our team works well because there is consistency throughout all members. We meet on a regular basis and the fact that the PBS Program has been in existence at our school for several years enables us to communicate expectations better to the staff. Our team puts in a lot of extra time for meetings and organizing activities that are designed to benefit our students. The administrator’s role is to facilitate our meetings, help delegate tasks, prepare reports, prepare the budget and to work collaboratively with the team and entire faculty. The staff is represented at each grade level, by our ESE department, by administration and by a campus monitor.

We utilize SWIS data, student surveys and teacher surveys to drive our decision making process. We share information with the rest of the faculty on a quarterly basis. The PBS team presents data and other general information to the faculty.

We excel in the areas of communication (we meet as a team regularly and we present to the faculty each quarter), variety of incentive programs (we have a PBS store, “Knights of the Round Table lunch, monthly student recognition activities and other events throughout the year) and experience (most of the members on our PBS team have been here for several years).

IMPLEMENTATION:

~As mentioned above, we reward students as much as possible. We thoroughly review teaching expectations at the start of each school year and again during the year for updates. We use surveys and SWIS data to help us decide where our most significant needs are and how to address these needs.

OUTCOMES:

~The number of repeat offenders has decreased and the total number of referrals throughout the school continues to decrease each year for the past three years. The existence of the PBS Program helps create a better consistency of student expectations, it helps give direction for teachers and it helps create a more positive school environment.

  OBSTACLES:

~We continue to work with some teachers that are inconsistent with their use of the PBS system in their classrooms. We are also working to update our incentives to accommodate different ways to motivate a wide variety of students (i.e. 8th grade students are motivated differently than 6th grade students). The funding for incentives is supplied through our PTSA; however, we feel the amount we receive limits our efforts. We are working to find alternative ways to reward students who may go “unnoticed” and are not able to participate in some of our events. The amount of extra time needed to organize and maintain our program is a significant burden on the PBS team.
