TEAMING:

~•Team members:

  • 2 intermediate classroom teachers: 3rd & 4th Grade
  • 4 instructional support: AYP Coach, SWS, Intervention Specialist, Dean
  • 1 paraprofessional
  • 2 guidance councilors
  • 1 AP: provides administrative support to the team
  • 1 district PBS representative: offered an outsider’s insight & support.

(We have added PBS team members this year. We are able to expand the team roster to meet the needs of the school.)

  • Monthly Meetings – scheduled for 45 minutes, a prepared agenda. Agenda items are generated from team members and administrative input.
  • Communication: Although far from perfect, we have made consistent efforts to keep everyone informed and included. Minutes are taken & distributed through email to all members. All members are welcome to contribute to the discussions & problem solving.

IMPLEMENTATION:

~This year our strength has been meeting regularly, even when it would’ve been easier to cancel meetings. For many team members, this has been a first year with PBS and there has been an expectation that PBS can make a difference for our school.

Lunchroom procedures: This has been an ongoing process all year. The team has responded to the input of our valuable paraprofessionals and teachers as we changed table arrangements, adjusted the score cards given to each class daily, how to position &use adult workers, etc. It is far from perfect and it would be honest to say that the procedures do not please everyone all the time, but we have made efforts to hear what people had to say about the lunchroom. We want our school to expect that the PBS team to hear what is said and then give a timely response to areas of concern.

Arrival & dismissal: Procedures were shared throughout the school year with staff and students. Although these times can be intense, overall it ran well

Mustang Cards: Students were recognized for positive behavior by any staff member with a Mustang Card. Students wrote their names on the cards and names were drawn during morning announcements each week. When students heard their names called they would go visit the Dean to select a prize from his prize shelf.

Hallway procedures: student behavior while walking the inside corridors was improved this year. A red line on the floor and an abundance of posters with the procedures were a consistent reminder of expected behavior.

OUTCOMES:

~•Behavior in hallways has been more consistent and safe.

There is more consistency of procedures across the campus. Adults can remind students of expected student behaviors, using a common vocabulary.

When ever there was a positive trend in the discipline referral data it sometimes surprised us, but always pleased us.

The team has expectations of being able to affect, individually and as a team, positive change school wide

  OBSTACLES:

~Time! It is very challenging to have the time to process data on a regular basis. We felt successful when we recorded data, although we recognize analyzing it is what makes it meaningful & helpful.

Time! Have enough time to meet, discuss & brainstorm together. Using email and opportunities to meet in the hallway or at duty helped fill the gap in some ways. It is helpful to have a team that is not only professional, but friendly

Time! Investigating possible solutions, hearing from other schools and giving new solutions an appropriate test run is hard to plan for. Once again, finding moments here & there have helped.

Meaningful incentives for students & teachers: Our school is a Title I school with 88% receiving Free/Reduced Lunch. Food is a big incentive for students – ice cream, popcorn, etc. PBS Grant money may not be used for food – and that is one of their favorite rewards. It was a challenge to find funding for food items. We asked PTA & administration for funds, but it was not always possible for those groups provide the needed money.
