TEAMING:

~Our team is well-represented and supports the needs of our professional learning community. Our Assistant Principal is our Coach. She plans and schedules our monthly team meetings and provides the team with the agenda via e-mail. Team members are encouraged to e-mail Sharon (AP) any additional items for discussion. We have our ESE Specialist, our Lead Guidance Counselor, and a teacher representing 1st, 2nd, and 4th grade on our team. Last year, we included a General Assistant and his attendance has not been reliable. Our School Psychologist will join our team meetings when possible. Hence, we are willing to be flexible when scheduling our upcoming meetings.

Our coach, (Sharon), brings the number of discipline referrals and Nature of the incidents (Data & Graphics) to each meeting so the team can determine the thrust of its planning and know where and what we need to reteach.

Information is shared at Faculty meetings and School Improvement Committee meetings. Minutes from the SIC’s are shared on the edushare drive. In effect, news is shared twice a month with this practice. Another strategy we use is our daily morning news show. We use the show as a brag book for PBS and read aloud the Positive Referrals, showcasing students caught doing the right/nice thing.

We all truly want positive support. We are great publicity for the project. The program gave us a united vehicle and shared the language critical to support the needs of all children.

IMPLEMENTATION:

~Rewarding students and staff with our positive referrals and utilizing the SWIS (online program). As the Assistant Principal, I enter all the SWIS data and like the fidelity it brings to IEP’s, student, parent, and team conferences.

OUTCOMES:

~Our high flyers are desirous of positive praise. They, too, seek happy and proud acknowledgement in lieu of negative consequences. The competition we have imbedded is not between individuals, but amongst grade levels and classrooms. The classroom teachers help motivate the children with daily, realistic expectations and encourage them to earn the greatest number of Pawprints.

  OBSTACLES:

~One of our teams is really old-school and we have had to model, model, model for them. We have strategically placed one member of that team on the PBS team. He has unconsciously injected a positive spin on PBS and that has helped them to open up to the possibilities PBS offers our students. He began by modeling his lotto game that he uses to help children focus their energy in a positive direction. Now, sometime later, we have asked for volunteers at every faculty meeting to share their own unique strategies.
