TEAMING:

Laurel Oak’s team works well together because not only does each member bring an expertise to the table; the team represents each fraction of the school. The team is not only committed but appreciates the different points of view that are discuss. There is equity in all the positions held and the administrators act as a facilitator and a behavior analysis to help problem solve. They speak about policies when necessary and do not try to control the conversation in the meetings.

During monthly meetings SWIS data is shared and hard copies of numbers and graphs pertaining to each grade level are distributed. The purpose is to examine location and time and type of infraction to create lessons to re-teach expectations and or change procedures to remedy existing problems.

PBS meetings are held monthly. Each representative on the team is responsible for sharing with their grade level. The representative is a voice for the grade level. An agenda is created prior to the meeting in order to receive input from all stakeholders. The team is also responsible for training and assisting their peers with PBS forms, procedures, and concerns.

Team members value each others input and opinions. The team is representative of the faculty. Communication is open and problems are discussed and solutions are suggested. Follow up on concerns does occur. Each member is committed to the success of the school. Character education is a focus for the team. The rewards and incentives are tied directly to lunch and recess which has made a huge impact on how often teachers praise students acknowledge student accomplishments.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Laurel Oak’s team excels by rewarding students and teachers consistently. The incentives motivate. Lesson plans have been complied to assist grade levels with teaching the expectations and character traits. The dean has provided information on specific strategies to use with the most difficult students. Referrals are entered into SWIS the same day they occur. Parents receive communication in a timely manner. The team is focused and organized.

OUTCOMES:
There is more of a sense of “catch ‘em being good” happening through out the building. Individual teachers are positively motivating students. Students look forward to the morning announcements to hear the Splash winners and Citizens of the Month winners. The students are aware of the monthly character trait that is being taught and can explain the meaning. Students know that there are expectations linked to behavior.

OBSTACLES:
Laurel Oak is a large school. It is difficult to stay on top of potential problems. The teams consist of 9 to 12 teachers. Buy in can sometimes be an issue. Not every member of the grade level is going to implement the program to the same degree..
