TEAMING:

The administrators attend the meetings when possible. They support what the team is doing and encourage us to do more. We have representatives from PE, ESE, General Education and Guidance. We also have a strong parent support that want PBS to be successful at their school. Three parents have dedicated their Wednesdays to operating our school PBS Store in the cafeteria.

The guidance counselor uses the data to guide her classroom lessons. She can pinpoint problems in certain classes or grades and then structure the lessons around the expectations that need to be taught again. The rest of the team uses the data to determine what the next steps are and how we can support the teachers in making a better environment.

We share doing our meetings whenever we have current data. It is also summarized in the school newsletter. The data has also been shared during the School Advisory Meetings and faculty meetings.

The strength of the team is that we want to be successful. Only 1 person carried over from last year’s team so we are working hard to get input from all stakeholders. Since PBS is part of our School Improvement Plan we need to be sure it is working and we can see a positive trend in the data. Our PTA is also a strong supporter of PBS at school. Teachers are willing to work with the students teaching the school-wide expectations of Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Your Best.

IMPLEMENTATION:

We have had a weekly school store every Wednesday during lunch time. Three parents have taken over the organization and running of this store. PTA wanted to provide free books to students so they have collected gently used books and are now selling them in the school store for the DLJ Compliment Cards. The students earn DLJ Compliment Cards for showing they are Being Respectful, Being Safe, Being Responsible and Being Their Best. These compliment cards are then used at the school store or to purchase Big Rewards. Our Big Rewards this year were a Rap Group (Nuckleheadz), Mad Science Guy, a Magic Show and a Sock Hop. We also created compliment cards that staff can write and reward other staff members. We have continued to have Get in Gear Awards where two students from every class may receive the reward once a week. They are presented the reward on our morning news show that is televised to all classrooms.

OUTCOMES:
The biggest change we have seen is when new students enter our school. We have grown from a student body of 325 our 1st year to 620 four years later. The students with the biggest behavior problems at the beginning of the year are the new students to the school at different grade levels. They have not learned our Expectations. As the expectations are learned their behavior improves. Students spend more time in class learning because they are following the Expectations. Our data shows very few students in the top of the triangle and it is fewer than last year’s data.

OBSTACLES:
Most staff to the PBS Team has not served on it before. We are attending the PBS training this summer offered by USF in order for all team members to fully understand the philosophy of PBS. We also had a new team leader and PBS Coach this year. She is the only person that served on the original team. The staff is great at supporting us through all of these obstacles. Our parents in charge of the PBS store last year moved so we needed to recruit new parents. Our new parents have been wonderful and will stay even though their grandchild is moving away from our school district.
