TEAMING:

The PBS team and staff at IHS work well together and have a unified philosophy of approach towards increasing positive behaviors in all students. All staff members have a background in behavior analysis, including the administrator. The team is representative of classroom staff and administration. The administrator is very interested in data and using it to address behavioral concerns.

The PBS team uses external data from the PBS project and internal data from the school to make school-wide decisions. Not only is the data used to look at the specific problem behaviors with each student, but also used to address group issues.

Information is shared with the faculty at the weekly staff meetings. The administrator also meets weekly with the behavior technicians to look at each classroom’s performance.

There are several strengths of the PBS team: (1) each member has a high level of knowledge in behavior analysis; (2) the team’s collaboration, participation, and respect for the PBS Project; and (3) high level of fidelity when it comes to teaching social skills during homeroom.

IMPLEMENTATION:

One area of PBS that the team excels in is the reward system. The reward system for students at IHS is very comprehensive and age-appropriate. All staff members reinforce expectations and rules on a daily basis. Another area of PBS that the team excels in is the data-based decision-making system. The data-based system uses internal and external data to look at students as a whole group, as a sub-group, and as individuals to make school-wide decisions.

OUTCOMES:
Since the implementation of the PBS Project, the morale of the staff and students has improved. The focus on teaching appropriate social skills has increased appropriate behaviors in most students. The PBS store is utilized to reward students for demonstrating appropriate social skills.

OBSTACLES:
The major obstacle the PBS team has had to overcome is the lack of funds available to assist with the Project. Because IHS is an alternative site, fundraisers are extremely difficult; however, IHS has been able to make positive steps forward in this area. IHS recently received funds from the school district to assist with the PBS Project. IHS is also seeking funds from outside sources, business partnerships, and the community.
