TEAMING:

The PBS team functions together very well. They are committed and believe in the PBS process and ultimately are committed to what is best for children. An administrator sits in on each meeting but not in a “top-down” capacity, but rather to share perspectives and pertinent data. The staff is well represented. We have representation from classroom teachers, PreK teachers, support staff, related arts, administration, guidance and ESE personnel.

At each PBS meeting the coach shows reports for both major and minor referrals using SWIS. Based on that information we have an open discussion about what we can do to change those problem areas. The reps are then asked to discuss things with their teams and report back. Once staff has come to a consensus about a suggestion we implement them. We also have had discussions at staff meetings.

Information is shared on a monthly basis to the staff by team representatives. There have been occasions when it has been shared to the entire staff at a staff meeting or in an email. We have also highlighted important issues with the students and staff on the morning news.

The overall strength of our team is our creativity for ideas/solutions, and our respect for each other’s opinions. Everyone is willing to share and in turn willing to listen to other’s feelings and opinions.

IMPLEMENTATION:

Students on both campuses earn tickets/feathers every day for doing the right thing. The students fill out their name and teacher’s name then turn it into a box in the cafeteria. Each morning on the news a news caster draws 2 tickets/feathers from each grade level box. Those names are read on the news. The students then go to the office for a trip to the treasure box.

We also do Student of the Month and Student of the Week. Every week each teacher chooses a student who has done a wonderful job in the classroom. The students name is read on the morning news and they receive a school pencil. Every month one teacher from each grade/team chooses a student who has displayed the district character trait during the month. The student’s picture and name is read on the news, and then displayed in the hallway. This student also receives a prize for positive behavior.

School expectations are reviewed by teachers on an as needed basis in the classroom and on the news daily. In addition, school wide procedures are posted around the school in poster format.

OUTCOMES:
We have fewer referrals than last year. Last year from Aug. to Mar. we had 411 major referrals and 395 minor referrals. This year for the same time period there were 333 majors and 181 minor referrals. Teachers are more positive with their students and visitors to our school have noticed how great our students behave.

OBSTACLES:
One of our major obstacles this year and next is staff turn around. We have had a lot of veteran teachers leave and many new teachers with little to no experience. We still have some staff members that think students should not be rewarded for things they are supposed to do on a regular basis. Rewards should only be given to those students that go above and beyond. Two campuses pose some difficulty to collaborate on ideas.
