TEAMING:

We have a very active and involved team. Our team consists of administrators, deans, support staff, teachers, and guidance counselors. We use our monthly data reports to make decisions regarding critical times and supervision. As a team, we also discuss what is working such as reward systems, and what we need to improve the next school year.

Data is reviewed at our monthly meetings as a group. The data is also reviewed as part of the monthly leadership meetings. As school leaders, we discuss critical times, locations and behaviors and brainstorm various strategies to make improvements. We also review the data to see what is working and how to continue with that success.

Data is shared with the leadership team on a monthly basis. From this meeting, the data is shared with each individual team through bimonthly team meetings. The data is also displayed on the PBS bulletin board in the teacher planning room in the front office.

Our team’s overall strengths include creativity for rewards for students ( Power Team, Friday Matinees, individual team recognition/rewards, movie and treats, basketball games, field days for Zero referrals) as well as rewards for teachers and staff (surprise flowers on Valentine’s day, Continental Breakfast, gift cards).

IMPLEMENTATION:

Our team excels in the use of the data to make decisions. All of our decisions come from reviewing the data monthly, such as, the decision to focus on the expectations during the last four months of school. The team decided to reward students for displaying a specific expectation during each month. Students were rewarded by special bulldog bucks that they redeemed for a chance at a raffle, displaying random acts of responsibility, etc.

OUTCOMES:
The climate of our school has changed since we started using PBS. The teachers have developed a better understanding of individual students’ behaviors. The students on our campus are friendlier and are starting to extend that positive behavior beyond the regular school day. Many students are demonstrating that they do not always need the “external reward” for their behaviors that the behaviors are becoming part of their daily behaviors.

OBSTACLES:
Our school district is undergoing a rezoning process due to a huge increase in our size. This year, we have gone from being a school of over 1300 students to having just under a 1000 students. Our population has also changed slightly. We have always been a school with a high rate of students on free or reduced lunch. This year, we increased that rate to just fewer than 80%. We continue to have a high population of ESOL students and students with disabilities. The number of African-American, Hispanic and Haitian students has also increased, to become the majority of our total school population. To overcome some of these hurdles, we started over from the beginning, re-teaching the expectations starting on day one of the school year. We also held refresher and booster sessions for teachers. We have also redesigned our Bulldog Bookstore to provide more opportunities for students to exchange their Bulldog Bucks for school supplies and necessities.
