TEAMING:

What makes your team work so well?  Please discuss in detail (e.g., what is your administrator’s role on the team, how is staff represented, etc.)? The PCH PBS team meets on a regular basis.  The team consists of four teachers, one support staff, one behavior specialist, one assistant principal, and one district representative.  When the team is not able to meet as a group, the team shares information and makes decisions regarding PBS activities and data via e-mail.  Members work well as a group sharing information and volunteering to implement the PBS activities that have been scheduled for the students.  The behavior specialist and school administrator are both part the PCH Student Assistance Team (SAT) and share PBS information on a weekly basis. The school administrator plans and performs the morning announcements of which PBS in an integral part.

How does your team use data to make decisions on campus? The behavior specialist brings relevant data from SASI to the PBS meetings.  The data format includes charts, as well as the number and type of discipline referrals.  This information is used to plan PBS activities and who will participate in these events. The data is also used for student participation in many school events.    

How do you share information with the rest of your faculty (e.g., emails, newsletters, meetings, etc.)?  How often do you share this information? PBS information is shared with faculty through the PCH bulletin board and at faculty meetings on a monthly basis.  Team members share information at other committee meetings.  This year the behavior specialist met regularly with the ninth grade team and the reading teachers to share data and information.

What do you see as the overall strengths of your team?  Please provide details. The team constantly strives to provide new and innovative PBS reward activities for students.  Students displaying the components of Pirate Pride are rewarded as part of PBS activities and by staff individually.

 
IMPLEMENTATION:

In what areas of PBS does your team excel (e.g., rewarding students/staff, teaching expectations, data-based decision-making, etc.)?  Please provide details below. Daily, PBS is part of the announcements for the day.  Pirate Pride expectations are reviewed and accomplishments are announced.  Periodically, individual students are recognized for displaying the components of Pride.  The student is called to the office to receive a prize from the assistant principal, who is part of the PBS team. Every classroom has a 24” x 36” poster with the school wide expectations of Pride.  Every student planner has the Pride expectations on the back cover.  In August, every PCH staff person was presented with a T-shirt with the Pride expectations on the back of the T-shirt.  These are worn on Friday on a regular basis.   In September, teachers selected students who displayed Pirate Pride so that the students could participate in a Treasure Hunt during the school day or receive a ticket to a football game.  In October, students could participate in football tailgate party which consisted of games and food.  Teacher selection allowed four hundred students to attend the Wizard of Oz matinee in November.  The Freshman were recognized for Pride via a Freshman fun day.  This was field day for students.  Those students who did not earn the Pride reward attended an educational session to learn more about Pirate Pride.  February brought a dance off fund raiser to support Pirate Pride.  This was an after school event.  During February and March, the reading teachers focused on students scoring in the lowest 25% on FCAT.  Students earned food items, T-shirts, and gift cards.  The administration did a “Turn up the Heat” reward of goody bags for the students the day before FCAT.  The students were reminded to do their best.  In April, each teacher for nominate two students to attend the spring musical, Godspell.  Three hundred Pride students attended this matinee. Pirate Pride is part of the Principal’s newsletter that is mailed to parents on a quarterly basis.


OUTCOMES:

Discuss the changes you have seen on campus since PBS implementation (e.g., data, climate, morale, etc.). The school culture has continued to grow more positive.  PRIDE is part of the everyday lifestyle at PCHS.  Students are excited to attend PRIDE and school events.  The data continues to show a dramatic decrease in referrals. 

 
OBSTACLES:

What are some obstacles that your team has had to overcome?  Please explain the process for overcoming these hurdles below. This has been a challenging year for the PBS team at PCH.  The stress of FCAT scores and school grades led to many teacher meetings/trainings which interfered with PBS planning.  Time and money continue to be obstacles for the team, as they try to implement more and bigger rewards and activities.  Finding the balance of reward activity time that does not interfere with academic time continues to be a challenge.
