TEAMING:
What makes your team work so well?  Please discuss in detail (e.g., what is your administrator’s role on the team, how is staff represented, etc.)? The reason our PBS team works so well together is because of diversity. Our team consists of one representative from each grade level along with representation from ESE, specials, support staff, guidance and administration. The principal and the assistant principal are both contributing members and their insight is very valuable as the team forms recommendations. Our diverse team respects the opinions of each member and builds upon their strengths

How does your team use data to make decisions on campus? Our team meets every month to analyze the data generated by SWIS reports.  We identify current trends, discuss possible solutions and implement recommendations as appropriate.

How do you share information with the rest of your faculty (e.g., emails, newsletters, meetings, etc.)?  How often do you share this information? Information is share through the team representatives and at the monthly faculty meeting.  We also take time at the faculty meeting to reward and recognize one another.  To start the year six committee members select one staff member that does an outstanding job reinforcing the sailor expectations.  The select staff member is recognized in detail for their efforts and is requested to select another outstanding staff member next month. Through this system of recognition our faculty forms a habit of watching and learning from each other.  As a committee we ensure training through the year. All new faculty members are trained one on one, by their PBS team member this personal attention promotes understanding and establishes a deep commitment.

What do you see as the overall strengths of your team?  Please provide details. Everyone is actively involved and understands the importance of consistently implementing, and monitoring the school’s identified expectations. Consequently, our students are recognized and the sailor expectations are reinforced often. On monthly basis students have the opportunity to attend a Mystery Event which is a fun activity that all grades will enjoy.  The cost is fifty sailor sea dollars per student.

IMPLEMENTATION:

In what areas of PBS does your team excel (e.g., rewarding students/staff, teaching expectations, data-based decision-making, etc.)?  Please provide details below. Our team excels at recognition, every other month we hold a special ceremony called Distinguished Sailors. Each classroom teacher recognizes two students from their class, a distinguished sailor and a most improved sailor.  The distinguished sailor is a student who exemplifies the sailor expectations and is consistently a role model for his or her classmates.  The most improved sailor is a student who has shown the most growth in achieving the sailor expectations on a daily basis. The ceremony is a special celebration where parents, community and peers hear all the praises and compliments the teachers have to offer to these students.

OUTCOMES:

Discuss the changes you have seen on campus since PBS implementation (e.g., data, climate, morale, etc.). Morale at our school is high!  Our students shine through the day reflecting the SAILOR expectations;

  • S-safety first
  • A-always responsible
  • I - I care attitude
  • L-listen well
  • O-on task
  • R-respect others

Students strive to be recognized a distinguished sailor and take great pride in becoming the most improved sailor.  Our students accept responsibility for their actions because they are given the opportunity to learn and fully understand what behavior is expected.

OBSTACLES:

What are some obstacles that your team has had to overcome?  Please explain the process for overcoming these hurdles below. One of the largest obstacles for our team was determining the most effective and consistent way of teaching the sailor expectations.  The heat in Florida makes outdoor training difficult and uncomfortable. So ultimately, we decided to film students modeling each of the expectations in each of the critical areas of the school. After filming the video was broadcasted to the entire school during the morning show. Not only does this procedure ensure a consistent message and allow for continued reinforcement wherever necessary.  The students are very attentive because they are watching themselves and their peers.
