TEAMING:

What makes your team work so well?  Please discuss in detail (e.g., what is your administrator’s role on the team, how is staff represented, etc.)?  Our team believes in the underlying principle that replacement behaviors need to be taught to improve student understanding and demonstration of appropriate behaviors.  Our belief is that proactive is better than consequential behavioral support due to the fact it works more effectively for 80% of the students.  We also support the reward system and understand it’s value.  As Principal, I support the activities and decisions of the team—regarding rewards, data analysis, and training needs.  The BMHS PBS Team consists of a variety of instructional staff including middle and high school teachers, guidance counselors, and administration.

How does your team use data to make decisions on campus?  The BMHS PBS Team reviews data to determine areas of greatest concern and need and then presents this information to the entire faculty for discussion, direction, and feedback or suggestions on how to address school-wide problem areas more effectively.

How do you share information with the rest of your faculty (e.g., emails, newsletters, meetings, etc.)?  How often do you share this information?   Information is shared on an as-needed basis.  As areas of behavioral concern become evident (based on the data review) this information is shared with the faculty to discuss solutions and strategies. Our PBS Team and Dean of Students shares referral and discipline information/data on a regular basis at monthly faculty meetings.  Information is discussed with individual teachers and Guidance Counselors regarding individual student needs as well.

What do you see as the overall strengths of your team?  Please provide details.  The team is goal-oriented, and they have a strong desire to implement PBS more efficiently to create a more positive school culture.

IMPLEMENTATION:

In what areas of PBS does your team excel (e.g., rewarding students/staff, teaching expectations, data-based decision-making, etc.)?  Please provide details below.  Currently, our staff excels at rewarding our students for the demonstration of appropriate behavior and school-wide expectations.  They are working on a staff recognition and reward component for implementation during the next school year.

OUTCOMES:
Discuss the changes you have seen on campus since PBS implementation (e.g., data, climate, morale, etc.). The major change at this time involves more teachers creating proactive changes and cultures within their classrooms.  Some of our teachers have developed additional reward systems within their personal classroom setting giving students the opportunity to trade their “eagle talons” for classroom supplies.  Teachers are utilizing the token economy to reward students more effectively.  A larger percentage of students are not receiving discipline referrals and are able to participate in reward day events.  As an example, we have had 435 out of 695 or 63% of our students who did not receive a discipline referral during the second semester of this school year, therefore making them eligible for the field trip to Wild Adventures in Valdosta, Georgia.

OBSTACLES:

What are some obstacles that your team has had to overcome?  Please explain the process for overcoming these hurdles below. One major obstacle involves total campus-wide buy in by all faculty members and includes the consistency of awarding eagle talons.  The PBS Team shares information at faculty meeting and serves as a proactive team for information sharing and problem solving.  Faculty members are encouraged by their peers who serve on the PBS Team to implement the reward system consistently.

Another obstacle is finding appropriate and acceptable rewards for students at the secondary level.  The PBS Team, in conjunction with faculty and students, use survey information to rework and revise reward menus on a regular basis.
