TEAMING:

What makes your team work so well?  Please discuss in detail (e.g., what is your administrator’s role on the team, how is staff represented, etc.)? Strong Core Team Members, administrative support, enable the Team Leader to effectively implement school’s Action Plan.  General Education as well as Special Education faculty members are represented on the Team.

How does your team use data to make decisions on campus? SWIS data is reviewed monthly during PBS Core Team meetings.  Brainstorming sessions occur to address increases in problem behavior across settings.  Bus referrals increased this past year and our administrators and select PBS Team members met with the Transportation Director in an effort to reduce referrals.

How do you share information with the rest of your faculty (e.g., emails, newsletters, meetings, etc.)?  How often do you share this information?  Information is shared at least monthly during faculty meetings, however, SWIS data is also distributed more frequently through email as necessary.  PBS Newsletters were sent out to parents twice this past year.

What do you see as the overall strengths of your team?  Please provide details. We are all in our roles because we intrinsically want to help students be the best that they can be.  Our team’s dedication to this goal is one of our most important strengths.

IMPLEMENTATION:

In what areas of PBS does your team excel (e.g., rewarding students/staff, teaching expectations, data-based decision-making, etc.)?  Please provide details below. Beachland has been able to demonstrate strength in many areas.  One of the key areas that we have improved upon is in the delivery of behavioral services using the Tier approach.  For Tier 1 (and thanks partly to USF), we adopted the Second Step curriculum and implemented it school-wide.  The BEP, social skills training, and anger management classes were implemented as Tier 2 interventions.  Students needing the highest level of support at Tier3, were assessed by the behavior specialist using FBA tools as needed.

OUTCOMES:

Discuss the changes you have seen on campus since PBS implementation (e.g., data, climate, morale, etc.). We have learned a great deal over the past 5 years of PBS Implementation at Beachland Elementary.  Faculty buy-in remains an important ingredient to ensuring the overall success of PBS.  Keeping faculty informed and obtaining their feedback through surveys are critical annual objectives.

Our SWIS data shows a dramatic increase in referrals over the past two years.  This coincides with the date that our school was rezoned.  Many of our new incoming students appeared to lack the social skills necessary for school success.  We realized the need to begin to focus our classroom instruction not just on academics, but on appropriate social interactions.

OBSTACLES:

What are some obstacles that your team has had to overcome?  Please explain the process for overcoming these hurdles below. Funding has been a challenge this year.  Our primary source of funding has been generated from a School Store.  This year, Beachland used these funds to not only obtain student incentives, but also to purchase Second Step curriculum for all grade levels.  For the first time in 5 years, we asked our PTA for a fundraiser to help support PBS.
